Psalm 90:12- So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom.
A financial accountant has many responsibilities: preparing and reviewing financial records, identifying potential areas of opportunity and risks, and providing solutions for businesses and individuals—at the end of the day, they must ensure the numbers make sense. As Christians, God is calling us to be spiritual accountants of our lives.
In this verse, Moses (the author) prays to God for wisdom to account for his time on earth. Honestly, it’s a prayer we should all pray much more frequently because time flies, life is uncertain, and God judges sin.
Majority of us navigate life assuming we have all the time in the world while not realizing that tomorrow may be our last day. That’s not to scare you, but hopefully to put into perspective that life is short, every moment matters, and none of us knows what tomorrow may bring (James 4:14).
By gaining a heart of wisdom to number our days, I’m convinced our 24 hour time period would become much richer for each of us. As Christian’s, counting our days isn’t about being consumed with death (we have hope beyond this life), but it should beg the question: with the resources I possess, the people in my life, the influence I have, in alignment with the word of God while knowing tomorrow could be my last day—Am I doing all that God is calling me to? Am I treating people as-if tomorrow is their last day?
We may not be reviewing financial records, but we should be reviewing the conditions of our hearts, reviewing the community around us, and reviewing the time we’re spending with God. We may not be identifying potential areas of opportunity and risks for a business, but we should be identifying the risks / temptations of sin in our lives while also taking advantage of opportunities to pray for others, forgive others, help someone in need, and to always act with godly integrity in all that we do.
Each hour, day, week, month, year, and season of your life matters. The question is, are you making the most of it? Only time will tell.
