No More Baby Talk

PROVERBS 26:4 “Do not answer [nor pretend to agree with the frivolous comments of] a [closed-minded] fool according to his folly, Otherwise you, even you, will be like him.” AMP

Years ago I was watching a comedy on television where one of the actors played the role of a stay-at-home mom. She was raising three extremely active children under the age of 4. She was so used to talking to them in “baby talk” that when her husband came home from work, she started talking to him as if he was a baby too. He had to help re-train her thinking so she would remember that she was an adult too, and that it was okay to use “adult language” around other adults.

1 Corinthians 1:20 tells us that God has made the wisdom of this world foolishness. It’s like “baby talk” compared to the true wisdom of God. All you have to do is read the daily news headlines to see the chaos that has resulted from following the world’s wisdom. If we’re honest with ourselves, some of us don’t have to read headlines; all we have to do is look at the history of our own lives and the consequences of the decisions we’ve made.

The New Testament is clear that we are in this world, but not of this world, i.e., we are not to take on the same mindset, values, habits, wisdom or actions of the world. 1 John 2:15 tells us not to “love” the things of this world. One of the definitions of “love” is:

discriminating affection which involves choice and selection“.

What is the basis of your “discriminating affection” and choices in your life? For believers, God has given us a better way to live through an increasingly deep personal relationship with Him through Christ, by the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit.

If there is chaos in your life, perhaps it time to get rid of “baby talk” wisdom and thinking, and make a decision to accept a better way through Christ, Who is the power and wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24).
